En 1883, Carlos Pellegrini, quien años más tarde sería Presidente de la Nación, le escribía desde Europa al Intendente de Buenos Aires:

“No hay ninguna Ciudad de mediana importancia que no tenga un Zoológico, que es

el punto favorito de reunión de las multitudes”. Finalmente, el 30 de octubre de 1888, por Ordenanza Municipal, nace el Zoológico de Buenos Aires, separado del Parque 3 de Febrero.

Su primer Director, Eduardo Ladislao Holmberg, un médico con inclinaciones naturalistas, dirige el Jardín Zoológico porteño durante 15 años.
Él construye la casi totalidad de los recintos y lo hace con el concepto de esa época, basado en que el Zoológico era un paseo para la gente, destinando grandes extensiones de parque para ellos y poco espacio para los animales, razón por la cual los recintos son de tipo carcelarios.

Por otro lado, sostenía que los edificios donde eran exhibidos los animales, debían responder arquitectónicamente al país de origen de los mismos.
La gran belleza de los edificios es lo que ha hecho que sean declarados “Monumentos Históricos”.

En 1904 y durante dos décadas, hablar de Clemente Onelli, 2º Director del Zoológico, era en la Ciudad de Buenos Aires, hablar del prestigioso Zoológico Municipal.
Un pintoresco italiano que unía su condición de sabio naturalista con una gran dosis de simpatía, no sólo le




dio la jerarquía científica a dicho paseo, sino que lo popularizó al máximo imprimiéndole un sentidoeminentemente didáctico, a través de carteles indicadores y confección de guías.

Él implementó paseos en Elefante, en Camello, en Ponys; haciendo que los visitantes aumentaran diez veces en número en el primer año de su gestión.
De 1 500 personas en 1903 visitaron el Zoológico 15 000 a fines de 1904.
Formado en la Universidad de Roma, nunca pudo despojarse de la idea de grandeza del Imperio Romano y a él se le deben los edificios y monumentos románicos que se ven en el parque.

Murió en 1924 y lo sucedió el tercer Director de prestigio, Don Adolfo Holmberg, sobrino del primer Director, quien estuvo al frente de la Institución hasta 1944.

A partir de él, se sucedieron unos a otros los directores políticos, amigos del Intendente de turno y con ellos, el deterioro progresivo del Zoológico, hasta convertirse a principios de la década del 90 en un Zoológico que había dejado de cumplir su función.

Incluido en un proyecto general de privatizaciones, impulsado por el Gobierno, pasó a manos privadas en 1991.

A partir de allí, comienza la remodelación del mismo, con un cambio sustancial de concepto:

“Eliminar las rejas y convertir las Jaulas en ambientes sustitutos”.
